Summary
- Excitement and skepticism surround news of Ted Lasso's potential return for a fourth season after mixed reviews.
- Despite the green light for Ted Lasso season 4, concerns arise over the possible absence of key character Jamie Tartt.
- The success of Ted Lasso's season 4 hinges on the return of the entire cast to maintain the show's quality.
When I heard Ted Lasso might be coming back for a fourth season, I was both excited and suspicious, because as much as I love the sports comedy series, it is great because of one specific condition. Notably, Ted Lasso ended after three seasons in 2023. While the first two years were lauded for their mix of hilarious comedy and heartfelt drama, the third season earned mixed reviews. Many were sad to see the show go, especially when the final season seemingly lacked the magic of the first two. However, Ted Lasso may have a chance to redeem itself.
Despite the fact that Ted Lasso's series finale aired in 2023, Apple TV+ recently greenlit the show for a fourth season. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. Television picked up options with three of the show's lead actors: Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift. Now, they must reach out to the remainder of the cast in hopes of signing them onto new deals. If this works out, Ted Lasso could truly be back, and better than ever. However, I do have some fears about how this Ted Lasso season 4 will go, especially in terms of casting.

Jamie Tartt May Not Be In Ted Lasso Season 4 - And That's A Big Problem
Why Jamie Is Pivotal To Ted Lasso
Although it seems that Warner Bros. and Apple are going to try and bring back the entire Ted Lasso cast, I fear that not everyone will be able to reprise their roles. According to Matt Belloni of Puck News, Jamie Tartt actor Phil Dunster will not be returning in Ted Lasso season 4 as a series regular. Currently, it seems like filming schedule conflicts are the reason for this. While I completely understand that some things cannot be prevented, it is still devastating to hear that Ted Lasso may be missing one of its best characters.
Without Jamie, Ted Lasso simply won't be the same.
Ted Lasso has an amazing ensemble cast, but Jamie Tartt is a particularly important character. He goes through some of the most drastic and significant changes throughout the show, alongside Brett Goldstein's Roy Kent. In season 1, he is an arrogant and selfish celebrity, but by season 3, he is kind, thoughtful, and a team player. Without Jamie, Ted Lasso simply won't be the same. Moreover, Jamie brings an element of sass and sweetness that makes the show so enjoyable to watch. Finally, his absence will also ruin the dynamic of Jamie, Keeley, and Roy.
Actor | Ted Lasso Character |
---|---|
Brett Goldstein | Roy |
Brendan Hunt | Beard |
Hannah Waddingham | Rebecca |
Nick Mohammed | Nate Shelley |
Juno Temple | Kelley |
Jeremy Swift | Leslie Higgins |
James Lance | Trent Crimm |
Ted Lasso Season 4 Should Only Happen If It Can Be Done With Everyone
Ted Lasso Already Had Its Ending
I love Ted Lasso and would be happy to see it return, but only if everyone can reprise their roles. Though the Ted Lasso finale wasn't the best, it was a tried and true ending. There were no open doors or loose ties. Therefore, if Apple is going to bring back Ted Lasso, it needs to be better than ever. The only way to do that, in my opinion, is by having everyone return. The worst thing that could happen is Ted Lasso coming back only to disappoint viewers.
Phil Dunster has two upcoming projects: a romantic comedy movie called Picture This and a psychological thriller series called Surface.
I don't want to speak too soon, but I think the only way for Ted Lasso season 4 to succeed is to bring back the remainder of Ted Lasso's cast, including Phil Dunster. I'm totally fine if that means delaying the show's comeback for a bit. Overall, the quality of the series is much more important than the speed at which they put it out. In this way, if Ted Lasso wants to succeed, it needs to prioritize its cast and story above all else.
